The signs that someone is tampering with your PC could be very subtle. You might notice a suspicious program that is suddenly running, weird messages are constantly popping up, or you are redirected to another site after you set a specific site as your default homepage. Some tampering can be difficult to detect, such as a key logger software which is designed to record everything you type and send it on to another person, so the sooner you take some precautions, the better your online security is.
If you suspect that someone has been tampering with your hardware, you need to get a case with a lock and chassis alarm. Lock the front door of your computer case every time you leave the room to ensure nobody can switch your PC on or plug in other devices.
You may check whether your Windows firewall program is still switched on. Make sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date and do a full scan to search for any malware that might have been installed. Back up all of your important files, format your hard drive and install your operating system again.
